From Law and Order to Open Borders: Biden’s Flip-Flop on Immigration

President Biden’s stance on immigration has undergone significant evolution throughout his political career. Before assuming office, Biden supported measures to bolster border security and curb illegal immigration. Notably 1994, as a senator, he voted for the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which allocated resources for border enforcement and immigration enforcement efforts.

During his tenure as Vice President in the Obama administration, Biden remained aligned with the administration’s immigration policies, which included deportations of undocumented immigrants and efforts to secure the border. In 2014, he supported the administration’s response to the surge of unaccompanied minors crossing the southern border, which involved increased enforcement and deportation measures.

However, since becoming President in January 2021, Biden’s approach to immigration has shifted. He has pushed for comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants and a reversal of some of the previous administration’s hardline policies. In February 2021, Biden introduced the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, which aimed to provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.
